You know you’re at a Vermont parade when the tractors outnumber even the spectators!
Our town, Monkton, celebrated its 250th birthday today. It’s among the couple dozen Vermont towns marking the anniversary this year. We’re all beneficiaries of a man who was actually my relative: Benning Wentworth, the first governor of New Hampshire, and quite a scoundrel by all accounts.
It was the first time most people in town could remember a parade, and they reckoned half the town was in the procession and the other half was watching!

Love the photo – absolutely captures Vermont small-town summer.
